How does a Mini-split work?

Heat pumps use electricity to pump refrigerant and transfer heat from one space to another.  Air conditioning is when we transfer heat from indoors to outdoors.  When we transfer heat from the outdoors in, we call it a "heat pump".

Mini splits offer flexibility because they can be suspended from a ceiling, mounted flush behind a drop ceiling or mounted on the wall.  Mini splits are perfect for smaller spaces where spot cooling is required or in a home where ductwork is not possible or desired.  Ductless heat pumps are a quiet solution because the motor and compressor are outdoors.  These units easily switch between cooling mode and heating mode.

As an alternative to fully ducted central air conditioning, mini splits come in cooling models also.
