There are two widely used types of refrigerants used in air conditioning and heat pump systems, R-410A and R-22, an ozone-depleting chemical. Effective January 2010, HVAC manufacturers will no longer produce any air conditioners or heat pumps that use R-22. R-22 will be phased out and R-410A will be the sole refrigerant used as a direct result of the new law. The United States agreed to provisions in the 1987 Montreal Protocol and instituted the Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990. R-410A does not contain chlorine and is referred to as the environmentally friendly refrigerant.
R-410A Refrigerant is a chlorine free, environmentally friendly, next generation refrigerant that is better for the environment. The Clean Air Act requires that as of 2010, all new air conditioning and heat pump units manufactured in North America will use chlorine-free refrigerants. By choosing R-410A, you are getting the latest in refrigerant technology and helping the environment!
Federal, state and local laws and guidelines are applicable to the introduction, reclamation, and recycling of these refrigerants. Violation of such laws may result in fines to any non-licensed or non-certified installer.
